A Wilsonville company's quest to keep the (traffic) lights on
A Wilsonville company is solving a problem that only traffic engineers can appreciate: How to keep traffic lights on in a power outage without introducing hazardous lead-acid batteries to intersections.
Blue Earth Energy Power Solutions is a tech company that has developed a lead-acid free battery system designed to work inside the electrical cabinets that power traffic signals at intersections, railroad crossings, freeway on-ramps and more.
BlueEarth's UPStealth® product, based on nickel zinc technology, is used by more than 35 agencies in the U.S. and Canada. Now, it's getting a field test in its home state. After being deployed in Hillsboro a year ago, its technology is getting a key tryout at the Eastern Oregon junction city of Biggs.
