First Md. Pedestrian Safety Countdown Signals
Unveiled
The State of Maryland is taking steps to
help make crossing busy streets a little
bit safer.
The state's first Pedestrian Safety
signals
were unveiled in Montgomery County
Monday
morning.
The county now has five new pedestrian
signals
with timers that count down the amount
of
time left to cross the street.
The signals were installed Monday at
the
intersections of Fenton Street and
Wayne
Avenue in Silver Spring; Colesville
Road
and Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring;
Georgia
Avenue and Reedie Drive in Wheaton;
Arcola
Avenue and Lamberton Drive in Wheaton;
and
Montgomery and Wisconsin Avenues in
Bethesda.
As part of the unveiling ceremony today,
the Wheaton Urban District's "Clean
and Safe Team" rewarded Wheaton-area
pedestrians who crossed the street
safely
and legally with certificates for free
doughnuts.
